NATURAL HAIR TIPS, DO’S AND DON’TS

This post was inspired by a request from an avid reader of this blog, and a wonderful friend, Temsss.

I’m going to drop a list of tips for hair growth and length retention, and a list of do’s and don’ts. I won’t lie, I don’t follow all the rules. I need help (LOL), but I’m getting better, and these tips are really useful. If you have any tips of your own, feel free to drop it in the comments section.

DO moisturize: Moisturizing is your hair’s best friend. It helps your hair in so many ways. You can use water, your hair spray, or a water/oil-based moisturizer. I use Nature’s Gentle Touch Daily Oil Moisturizer.

DON’T apply too much heat to your hair.

TIP: When shampooing, wash with warm water (to remove all excess product build up and open up your pores), and rinse with cold water (to retain moisture).

DO protect your hair: If you’re not sporting a protective style (crochet, weave, braids, locs), you should protect your hair by having a good nighttime routine- moisturize, detangle, oil, braid/twist. You should also endeavor to cover your hair by using a satin scarf or satin bonnet before going to bed. This is because normal pillowcases are cotton , and they cause friction with the hair, leading to weakened hair/ hair breakage. You can also use a satin pillowcase.

DON’T towel dry your hair: This seems like the easiest option after shampooing, but you really should stop this. This is a detailed post explaining why you shouldn’t. in summary, most towels contribute to hair damage. It’s cheaper and better for your hair if you use paper towels.

DON’T leave protective styles on for too long. This is because leaving protective styles such as braids, weaves and crochet twists on for too long leads to dirt build up at the roots. This build up clogs your pores, and prevents hair growth. It also leads to the hair at the roots becoming very tangled, and can cause hair breakage.

TIP: Warm up your oils before applying to your hair. This can be applied by putting you oil/oil mixture in the microwave for a minute/ less than a minute. The aim of this is that the heated oil stimulates your hair follicles and aids hair growth.

I hope this post has been very helpful, and don’t forget to drop any tips of your own in the comments section. ❤
