This is my first Gothic novel, and I didn’t really know what to expect. I’m pleased to say that I enjoyed it and it was worth all (almost) 11 hours of listening.

The narrator did a great job of telling the story, and it was absolutely mesmerizing. I must admit that I got carried away at some point and zoned out, but that’s more on me and not really the narrator’s fault.

I loved entering into Noemi’s world in Mexico City and the following her to High Place and the surrounding community. She had to go to High Place at the request of her father, after her cousin, Catalina, sent the strangest letter. Catalina didn’t seem to be in the best place mentally, and this was an extra challenge for Noemi.
The characters living at High Place were very annoying and later downright evil. The people Noemi met in the community were more welcoming and helpful towards her plight and mission. I spent the longest time trying to guess and solve the mystery of the house, but nothing could have prepared me for the big reveal(s).
