Kudos to the narrators. I really loved their performances and they did a wonderful job of bringing the story to life.

I loved this story and I love discovering unique premises. This is a fantasy world with real life, current time events playing out. There’s a world with sirens, gargoyles, elokos, mermaids, and *spoiler*s. This world also has racism, classism, bullying, protests, and lots of other stuff that’s totally relatable.

At the beginning of the story, it seems like it’s focused on Tavia, but we soon realize that it’s Effie’s story that’s taking center stage. We follow both girls through their lives and dealing with changes and the community around them. Tavia deals with pressure from her dad about hiding who she is in a world that hates people like her, and struggles with trying to connect with her grandmother. Effie is dealing with changes she can’t explain and trying to uncover the secrets about her past and heritage. The supporting characters are great, and everything plays out at a wonderful pace.

Blurb/Synopsis:
Bethany C. Morrow’s A Song Below Water is the story for today’s listeners – a captivating modern fantasy about black mermaids, friendship, and self-discovery set against the challenges of today’s racism and sexism.
In a society determined to keep her under lock and key, Tavia must hide her siren powers. Meanwhile, Effie is fighting her own family struggles, pitted against literal demons from her past. Together, these best friends must navigate through the perils of high school’s junior year.
But everything changes in the aftermath of a siren murder trial that rocks the nation, and Tavia accidentally lets out her magical voice at the worst possible moment.
Soon, nothing in Portland, Oregon, seems safe. To save themselves from drowning, it’s only Tavia and Effie’s unbreakable sisterhood that proves to be the strongest magic of all.
